K Line and Rikkyo University partner on carbon capture research

February 20, 2025

Through the research project they will develop an onboard CO2 capturing system (OCCS) for one of K Line's liquified CO2 (LCO2) carriers.

Japanese shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) and Tokyo-based Rikkyo University will focus on advancing research on metal-organic framework (MOF) material to be used in the OCCS technology.

MOF is a type of porous polymer made of organic molecules and metal ions. The material has fine pores that can adsorb and separate CO2. The project will test the adsorptive capacity of the MOF material when exposed to CO2 exhaust gases.

They hope the material will enable the OCCS to better capture and store the CO2 emitted from the vessel, K Line claims.
