The car carrier, Nereus Highway, which has a capacity of 7,000 vehicles, can run on both LNG and conventional marine fuels. It is the first LNG dual-fuel vessel that K LINE has ordered from a Chinese shipyard.
The use of LNG as fuel is “expected to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2 ), a greenhouse gas (GHG), by 25% to 30%, emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx ), which cause air pollution, by almost 100%, and emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx ) by approximately 75%,” K Line claims.
LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
