The carrier is equipped with an LNG dual-fuel engine supplied by the German engine maker MAN Energy Solutions. The vessel has been named Poseidon Highway and has the capacity to carry 7,000 vehicles.
The use of LNG as marine fuel is expected to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas (GHG), by 25% to 30%, K Line says.
LNG, essentially a fossil fuel, is made of around 95% methane. During its life cycle, right from extraction to transportation and storage LNG emits methane, a greenhouse gas (GHG) which is much more polluting than CO2, says the US-based NGO Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).
