The feasibility study for the production unit was conducted jointly by Singapore-based Keppel Corporation, Australian fertiliser producer Incitec Pivot and Singapore's state-owned conglomerate Temasek in 2021.

According to Keppel, the green ammonia will be supplied to Australian markets and exported to Singapore for the company's industrial use. “Excess green ammonia would be marketed and sold to customers in Asia where demand for green energy resources is growing rapidly,” it said.

The infrastructure company noted the governments of Singapore and Australia had signed a green marine supply agreement in October 2022. However, it did not specify if any part of green ammonia produced in the Gladstone facility will be used as marine fuel.

Green hydrogen as feedstock

Meanwhile, Keppel has also formed a separate consortium with Australian and Japanese partners to build a 2,500-megawatts (MW)- equivalent green hydrogen plant, also in Queensland.

The consortium consists of Australia’s state-owned energy provider Stanwell Corporation and Japanese industrial gas company Iwatani Corporation, power utility Kansai Electric Power Company and conglomerate Marubeni Corporation.

A portion of this green hydrogen will be used as feedstock for the green ammonia plant in Gladstone, while the remainder will be exported to Japan and Singapore and used locally within Australia, said Keppel.
