Kongsberg reveals alternative fuel-ready offshore vessel designs
Norwegian technology company Kongsberg Maritime has unveiled a set of new designs for anchor handlers (AHT) and platform supply vessels (PSV), which can utilise alternative fuel sources – methanol, ammonia and hybrid-battery power.

The company has received Approval in Principle (AIP) from the classification society DNV to operate ammonia-fuelled engines in the new AHT and PSV designs.
These vessels can also “incorporate an offshore charging capable plug-in hybrid option, to enable emission-free battery-powered operation,” Kongsberg Maritime claims.
“Changes to regulations and uncertainty around preferred fuels have driven the demand to create ships that are ready for the future,” Kongsberg Maritime’s ship design solutions director Einar Vegsund says.
Kongsberg's AHT vessel range will include four sizes ranging from small to extra-large, while the PSV range will come with a “variety of options for the type of cargo, cargo volume and cargo deck area, which can be configured depending on the operational profile of the vessel.”
