Escort tugs are vessels designed to assist large ships, such as tankers or cruise liners, in navigating through ports, narrow channels, or challenging waterways.
The escort tugs, which are to be named SD AISEMAHT and SD QWII-AAN’C SARAH, will be able to run on methanol and conventional marine fuels.
Designed by naval architect Robert Allan, the vessels will be built by Turkish shipbuilder Sanmar Shipyards Altinova.
Upon delivery, the vessels will be deployed to support the Trans Mountain Expansion Project. The escort tugs will accompany tankers from the Port of Vancouver's harbour boundaries to the Pacific Ocean, guiding them along the commercial shipping routes of the Salish Sea.
The company expects the escort tugs to enter service by 2025.
KOTUG Canada is a partnership between Dutch towage company KOTUG International and Canadian maritime firm Horizon Maritime.
