The vessel, Containerships Aurora, was bunkered with around 132 mt of LNG at the Lithuanian port. The operation marked the port’s first LNG bunkering.
The bunkering operation was carried out by UK-based LNG supplier Avenir LNG’s bunker barge Avenir Aspiration.
CMA CGM currently operates three LNG-powered vessels in the Baltic Sea region, making regular calls to the Port of Klaipeda.
“LNG significantly reduces emissions of sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter,” Port of Klaipeda says.
LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a GHG compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
The port authority also has plans for “on-site production and bunkering of green hydrogen starting in early 2026.”
