The initiative forms part of the Perth Transport Authority’s (PTA) METRONET Swan River Ferry Service Expansion programme, which involves the design and construction of five battery-electric ferries for operation on the Swan River in Perth.

Under the agreement, LR will deliver classification and technical assurance across the design and construction phases.

The project will introduce “electric propulsion technology into public transport service in Australia,” according to LR.

The first ferry in the series is expected to enter service in 2027.
