Hamburg-based energy firm Mabanaft plans to build an ammonia import terminal at its existing tank storage terminal in Blumensand in the port of Hamburg, Germany.

The import terminal is slated to begin operations in 2027. Mabanaft will modify the port’s existing jetty and construct a new tank to facilitate ammonia storage. Pipelines will also be laid to transport the ammonia from the jetty to the storage tank.
The import terminal will make ammonia available for shipping and for further processing into hydrogen, said Philipp Kroepels, director at Mabanaft.
The firm has not specified the ammonia storage capacity or whether the ammonia stored will be green, blue or grey.
Last year, Mabanaft completed a hazard identification (HAZID) analysis for the import terminal. A HAZID analysis is a systematic assessment to identify and evaluate potential hazards associated with a project to prevent or mitigate risks to safety and the environment.
