According to C2X, the plant will be located in the Punta del Sebo area in the Spanish Port of Huelva.
Part of the production will be supplied to the shipping sector as bunker fuel, primarily to fuel Maersk’s growing fleet of methanol-powered vessels.
Maersk has placed an order for 25 methanol-powered container carriers from Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group as part of its efforts to achieve decarbonisation goals.
Maersk and the Spanish government partnered last November to explore the production of green methanol and green ammonia in Spain.
The Danish shipping firm has also separately partnered with the governments of Egypt and Jordan to study the feasibility of producing green marine fuels in these regions.
“The green transformation can only be achieved if partners from the public and private sector work hand in hand, because a lot of what we are doing is pioneering work,” Diego Perdones Montero, C2X Spain’s managing director said.
