Maersk invests in green methanol start-up C1

Through its arm Maersk Growth, Danish shipping giant A. P. Møller – Maersk has invested in Berlin-based climate tech company C1, which aims to produce cost-competitive green methanol through a catalytic reactor.

C1 claims that the containerised design of their reactor “enables the mass-production of high-purity green methanol at a competitive price." The concept is currently in the pilot stage.

The reactor employs C1’s proprietary catalysis method to produce green methanol from waste biomass or carbon dioxide and hydrogen.

Present technology will make powering vessels with green methanol more expensive, says Maria Strandesen, head of future fuels innovation at Maersk. She believes that C1's "ultra-efficient catalysis" will reduce costs, and its decentralised approach will enhance scalability.

Last year, Mærsk entered its ninth agreement to source over 1 million mt/year of green methanol by 2025 for its 19 methanol ships on order.
