The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) has announced a $60 million investment in developing a shore power facility at Flynn Cruiseport Boston in the US.

The port authority plans to equip its two main berths with shore power facilities.

This will enable ships to draw electricity from the shore instead of using their onboard diesel engines to generate power while docked, Massport says.

Once the project is finished, nearly 80% of the ships currently serving Boston will be able to connect to shore power.

Scheduled for completion by 2029, the project is part of a $100 million investment in upgrading and enhancing port infrastructure.

Shore power has been gaining traction across ports and ship operators globally because it helps to reduce emissions while a ship is berthed.

This month, the Port of Barcelona installed its first onshore power supply (OPS) system for ferries at the Grimaldi Group’s terminal. At the Port of Aberdeen, Maersk-owned Stillstrom conducted its first plug-in power trial. Meanwhile, Nassau Cruise Port in the Bahamas announced plans to construct a shore power system for cruise ships.
