Meta joins Norden’s book-and-claim system for emission savings
Facebook owner Meta has tapped into Norden’s biofuel insetting program to reduce some of its upstream emissions from the transport of goods like computing equipment and construction material.

Under the agreement, Danish shipping company Norden will use its book-and-claim system to allocate emissions reductions achieved through biofuel use on some of its vessels to enrolled customers like Meta.
Meta’s goods may not be directly transported on biofuel-powered vessels, but Norden’s book-and-claim system enables customers to offset emissions through reductions achieved from burning biofuel elsewhere in its fleet, the company said.
The book-and-claim system is a supply chain model enabling cargo owners or logistics providers to buy emission reduction credits from shipowners who have invested in low- and zero-emission fuels. These carbon savings are recorded in the buyers’ emissions dashboards and are audited annually by a third party.
The biofuel blends used by Norden will be ISCC-certified, offering an 80-90% reduction in life-cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These savings are independently verified by Paris-based Normec Verifavia and recorded on an external registry managed by 123Carbon.
