12 methanol-fuelled vessels were added to DNV's Alternative Fuels Insight (AFI) database in April, DNV's senior consultant Kristian Hammer said in a social media post. This takes the total number of methanol-fuelled vessels in operation and on order for delivery by 2028 to 281, up from 269 in March.
The largest share of newbuild orders for methanol-fuelled vessels are container ships (169), followed by tankers (53) and bulk carriers (19), according to the DNV's latest update.
“Momentum continues to build for ammonia,” with four confirmed orders in April, Hammer noted. There are now 19 confirmed ammonia-fuelled vessels on order for delivery by 2027. Bulk carriers (11) account for the largest share of these orders, followed by gas tankers (3), crude oil tankers and tugboats (2 each), and container ships (1), the database shows. Only one ammonia-fuelled offshore supply vessel is in service currently.
10 LNG-fuelled vessels were ordered in April. There are currently 535 LNG-fuelled vessels in operation and 509 vessels on order for delivery by 2028.
