MHI and Namura Shipbuilding deliver an LPG-fuelled LPG/ammonia carrier
Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has announced the delivery of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) dual-fuel LPG/ammonia carrier to MOL Energia, a Singapore-based unit of shipping company Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL).

The 87,000-cbm capacity carrier, Phoenix Harmonia, can run on LPG or conventional marine fuels.
The vessel is equipped with a system “of using LPG in the cargo tank as fuel to propel the ship,” MHI says.
“This ability to secure LPG fuel from the cargo tank reduces equipment needed on deck and ensures flexibility during loading at the LPG terminal,” the company adds.
The vessel has been built by Japanese shipbuilder Namura Shipbuilding with support from MHI’s subsidiary Mitsubishi Shipbuilding.
Mitsubishi Shipbuilding developed the vessel’s hull form and detail designs, provided LPG-related machinery and equipment, and offered technical advice during the construction phase.
Phoenix Harmonia is “one of the largest vessels of its type capable of carrying ammonia, in anticipation of future demand growth in the transport of large volumes of ammonia,” MHI claims.
