Danish shipping firm Norden will allocate carbon credits to Microsoft based on greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions achieved from its biofuel-powered voyages, using a book-and-claim mechanism.

Norden has not disclosed the exact number of vessels that will be powered by biofuel blends under the programme. But the book-and-claim system will allow Microsoft to claim Scope 3 savings by paying a premium, even if its actual cargo is carried on conventionally-fuelled ships.

This mechanism can help “any company that is dependent on maritime transportation in reducing its supply chain emissions in the here and now,” Norden said, adding that it allows carriers to “overcome the challenges of limited geographic availability of low-carbon fuels.”
