The 63,896-dwt bulk carrier was built by Japanese shipyard Oshima Shipbuilding. It features a hard-sail wind power propulsion system. This system uses large hard sails to capture wind energy and convert it into propulsive force. It helps to move the ship forward and reduces the need for traditional fuel, the company said.
MOL Drybulk, a subsidiary of MOL Group, will operate the new vessel. It is the second of nine MOL Group vessels to be fitted with the wind power propulsion system.
According to MOL, the system is expected to decrease fuel use and greenhouse (GHG) emissions by about 7-16%, depending on the voyage route and weather conditions.
