The MOL-led consortium comprises MOL Coastal Shipping, Tabuchi Kaiun, Niihama Kaiun, Murakami Hide Shipbuilding and Hanshin Diesel Works.
The companies claim it is the first time that methanol will be used as primary fuel on a Japanese coastal vessel. A coastal vessel is used for transportation within a country.
Murakami Hide Shipbuilding will construct the vessel for delivery in December next year. Hanshin Diesel Works will develop the methanol-fuelled engine for the ship.
The vessel will be jointly owned by MOL Coastal Shipping, Tabuchi Kaiun, and Niihama Kaiun.
