QatarEnergy is ordering these LNG carriers as part of its North Field expansion project to increase its LNG production capacity from 77 million mt/year to 110 million mt/year.

Japan's Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line), Malaysia's MISC, and China LNG Shipping have also formed a consortium to charter 12 LNG carriers to QatarEnergy.

Seven of these vessels will be constructed by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and five by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries.
