Indah Singa Maritime, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mitsui O.S.K Lines (MOL), has taken delivery of Singapore’s first membrane LNG bunker vessel.

The LNG bunker vessel, Brassavola, is equipped dual-fuel engines and will be able to run on both LNG and conventional marine fuels. It features two tanks integrated with French containment system builder GTT’s flex membrane containment system, which GTT says is "a cryogenic liner used to contain liquefied gas at low temperatures during shipping, onshore and offshore storage, at atmospheric pressure.”

The vessel is equipped with a mass flow metre and has been built by Singaporean shipbuilding firm Seatrium.

Following delivery, the Brassavola will be chartered by Pavilion Energy to supply LNG bunker in the Port of Singapore from February. It will also serve TotalEnergies Marine Fuels' customers under a long-term agreement with Pavilion Energy.

“The completion of the Brassavola is a significant step forward in transitioning towards the use of cleaner and decarbonised fuels like LNG in Singapore,” MOL’s managing executive officer Kazuya Hamazaki says.

LNG can curb carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels, but its methane emissions are much higher. Methane has a global warming potential that is around 30 times greater than CO2 over a century, and over 80 times greater over 20 years, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's latest study into it.

LNG gaining popularity in Singapore

LNG sales rose by a massive 581% 2023, as gas prices came off from recent highs and as more vessels with dual-fuel LNG engines entered into operation. Around 300 mt/day of LNG was sold in 2023, climbing from just 50 mt/day in 2022, according to latest figures from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).
