The system will be installed onboard MOL’s 75,000-dwt product tanker, Nexus Victoria. This will be the first time that a Japanese shipping company will install an onboard carbon capture system on its vessel, MOL claims.
The system includes a scrubber function that eliminates 99% of sulfur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM) from exhaust gases, along with a carbon capture and storage (CCS) function that retrieves up to 10% of CO2 from the emissions. CO2 is absorbed and captured by a unique chemical, then released ashore. The separated CO2 can be utilised by greenhouses, synthetic fuel producers, and other end users.
MOL expects the system to be installed in the end of 2024.
