Nanni develops methanol dual-fuel engine with ScandiNAOS

May 26, 2026

The methanol dual-fuel engine is designed to operate on a fuel blend of about 70% methanol and 30% diesel while maintaining engine performance.

French marine engine manufacturer Nanni has commissioned Sweden-based marine engineering firm ScandiNAOS AB to develop a methanol dual-fuel version of its high-speed marine engines.

The conversion kit developed by ScandiNAOS includes a methanol control system and hardware modifications enabling methanol injection into the fuel system.

According to Nanni, the engine can automatically switch back to diesel operation when methanol is unavailable, without interrupting navigation.

The dual-fuel setup includes methanol-specific engine control units, an air intake manifold fitted with methanol injectors, and a double-walled methanol fuel rail for safety requirements.

ScandiNAOS AB specialises in methanol-based dual-fuel systems and fuel technology solutions for marine engines.

Testing of the converted engine was completed in late 2025 under International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) standards and in the presence of classification society RINA.
