This status will allow NEMO to contribute technical insights and policy recommendations on nuclear technology adoption in the maritime sector.

According to the IMO, organisations applying for consultative status must demonstrate relevant expertise and the ability to meaningfully support the IMO’s regulatory work.

NEMO members include classification societies and major industry players such as the American Bureau of Shipping, Lloyd’s Register, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and CORE Power, among others.

Several members of this group are working on concepts such as nuclear-powered vessels and floating nuclear plants to enable low-emission fuel production.

In addition to its new IMO status, NEMO will participate in the International Atomic Energy Agency’s upcoming Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) program. The initiative aims to develop regulatory frameworks for the use of nuclear power in maritime applications.

“NEMO will provide technical expertise and strategic guidance across all ATLAS Implementation Groups, helping to define the future of nuclear-powered maritime solutions,” the organisation said.
