Turneo, a joint venture between Hamburg-based investment firm Karlsson and energy service provider EWE, has commenced operations at its 2-megawatt (MW) electrolysis plant in Cuxhaven.
The hydrogen produced onshore in Cuxhaven has been supplied to the first of four transport vessels in the German energy company Wintershall Dea’s Mittelplate fleet. The vessel will ferry passengers and materials between Cuxhaven and the Mittelplate crude oil reservoir.
How it works
The Wintershall Dea ship was first converted to hydrogen hybrid propulsion.
The hydrogen fuel was transported in a tank trailer to the ship and converted into electricity using a fuel cell. The electricity was then stored in batteries to drive the ship’s electric motor.
Going forward, the plant will produce hydrogen for other ships as well. It will also provide supply to a hydrogen refuelling station in Cuxhaven to boost onshore hydrogen mobility in the region.
