The green hydrogen-powered inland vessel, known as H2 Barge 1, will begin operations in June, sailing between the Port of Rotterdam and Nike's European Logistics Campus in Belgium.
This follows Nike's collaboration with Dutch shipping company Future Proof Shipping to convert an existing diesel barge into a zero-carbon-emission vessel by replacing its combustion engine with hydrogen-driven fuel cells.
French hydrogen supplier Air Liquide will supply the green hydrogen needed to power the fuel cells.
According to Nike, the barge will help reduce its overall carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2,000 mt/year.
“This shipping project proves that moving cargo with zero-emissions and zero impact is possible, and we hope it accelerates the industry to follow in Nike’s footsteps and move to zero,” said Richard Klatten, chief executive of Future Proof Shipping.
The H2 Barge 1 will be chartered by terminal operator BCTN Network of Inland Terminals for Nike’s European operations.
