French shipowner and operator Socatra has signed an agreement with Finnish wind propulsion systems maker Norsepower to install two rotor sails on one of its medium range tankers.

The two 35-meter-tall rotor sails will be delivered in December 2023, and retrofitted on the 50,000-dwt tanker Alcyone in either the fourth quarter this year or in the first quarter next year. The tanker is chartered by global energy company TotalEnergies.

When wind hits a spinning rotor sail, air flow increases on one side, putting pressure on the cylindrical sail to move in the other direction where there is less airflow. Norsepower says its rotor sail system can reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 8%.

“Taking a holistic approach to decarbonisation and combining clean technology solutions enables key progress towards emissions reduction goals, minimising fuel costs, enabling carbon regulatory compliance, and improving IMO Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) ratings,” Norsepower said in a statement.

Norsepower has made several other deals to install its rotor sails on vessels in recent months, including a ferry operated by Scandlines, a VLCC operated by China Merchant Energy Shipping, vessels operated by Mining major BHP and Pan Pacific Copper and LNG carriers built by Chinese Dalian Shipbuilding Industry.
