Northern Lights is a carbon capture and storage joint venture by Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies.

The LNG dual-fuel CO₂ carriers, equipped with rotor sails and air lubrication systems, will transport liquefied CO₂ from European capture sites to the Northern Lights terminal in Øygarden, western Norway. Northern Lights has signed transport agreements with Danish wind power company Ørsted and Norwegian chemicals firm Yara International.

Two vessels have been launched from the dry dock at Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industry.

The first two in the series, Northern Pioneer and Northern Pathfinder, were built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry, while the third and fourth vessels were constructed by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore.

The first three vessels will be managed by K LINE LNG Shipping, a subsidiary of Japan’s Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K LINE), whereas the fourth will be chartered to German ship management firm Bernhard Schulte.

The company has not disclosed further details about the vessels, including their names.
