August 30, 2022

Northern Lights, a joint venture between oil trio Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies, has agreed to ship carbon dioxide captured from Norwegian firm Yara’s ammonia and fertilizer plant in the Netherlands to Norway.

As per the agreement, 800,000 mt of carbon dioxide/year will be captured from Yara Sluiskil plant from early-2025 onwards. The gas will then be compressed, liquefied, and shipped to the Northern Lights site for permanent storage under the seabed off the coast of western Norway.

The companies claim this to be the world’s first cross-border deal for shipping and storage of carbon dioxide.

“This agreement will establish a market for carbon dioxide transport and storage,” Northern Lights managing director Børre Jacobsen says.

Northern Lights is a part of the Norwegian government’s carbon capture and storage project called ‘Longship’. The joint venture is responsible for developing carbon dioxide transport and storage facilities.

Last year, it ordered two liquified carbon dioxide carriers from Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (DSIC) for the project.
