Norway-India partnership explores green ammonia production
Norway-based H2Carrier and Indian hydrogen producer Greenstat Hydrogen India are assessing the feasibility of setting up floating green ammonia production plants in India and Sri Lanka.
CONCEPT: H2Carrier's floating green hydrogen and ammonia production facility. H2Carrier
H2Carrier has developed a floating green ammonia production plant concept. It involves a very-large gas carrier (VLGC) converted to a floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO) with an estimated production capacity of around 100,000-230,000 mt/year. This production capacity is scalable, according to the company.
The FPSO will produce green ammonia from hydrogen and nitrogen through the well-matured Haber-Bosch process. Green hydrogen will be produced through electrolysis of desalinated seawater with renewable energy. Nitrogen will be captured directly from the air and synthesised in an onboard ammonia generator.
Green ammonia will be stored onboard in specially designed, ammonia-compliant steel tanks.
The two companies are now exploring offshore locations in India and Sri Lanka for setting up these plants.
The produced ammonia is expected to serve the shipping sector, along with other industries. However, the timeline for the project has not yet been disclosed.
