The company has ordered two hydrogen-capable bulk carriers from ship designer Naval Dynamics, which are scheduled for delivery in 2027. The vessels will be equipped with hydrogen fuel cell technology.

Møre Sjø cited technology maturity, cost-effectiveness and secure access to fuel as key reasons for choosing hydrogen as a marine fuel, according to its technical director Torstein Holsvik.

“When the ships are completed in early 2027, we expect the price for [green] hydrogen and the price for marine gas oil, which could have been an alternative, to be in line,” Holsvik said.

The vessels will be supplied with green hydrogen produced at GreenH’s planned facilities along the Norwegian coast – in Hammerfest, Bodø, Sandnessjøen, Kristiansund, Rogaland and Slagetangen regions.

Most of these plants are expected to begin production by 2027, with portions of their output allocated for marine bunkering, according to the GreenH’s website.

“All fossil fuels will gradually be subject to an increased CO2 tax, [green] hydrogen will not. Low electricity prices for hydrogen production in the North, combined with support from Enova and the NOx Fund, have weighed heavily in the choice of fuel,” Holsvik noted.
