The ships have been conceptualised to feature containerised hydrogen power units developed by HAV Hydrogen.

HAV’s containerised energy system is made up of hydrogen-fuelled proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells in a 20-foot container and necessary power supply equipment.

The design is a modular system that can be installed on a vessel's deck to power "propulsion systems or for auxiliary power onboard a vessel." It can be installed on newbuilds as well as retrofits.

“The system is designed for operation in air temperatures between –20°C to 35°C and seawater temperature from 0-32°C,” HAV Hydrogen explained.

Classification society DNV has approved the containerised fuel cell concept and is expected to classify the proposed vessels, designed by Dutch ship designer Ankerbeer for Maris Fiducia.

The companies have not specified a project timeline and fleet size for the hydrogen-capable vessels.

The ships will be chartered by German operator Schulte & Bruns under a time-charter agreement for commercial operations and hydrogen bunkering upon completion. Green hydrogen to power the ships will be sourced from Norwegian Hydrogen, the joint statement said.
