The specialist ship Pacific Grebe, designed for safely transporting nuclear cargo worldwide, has been equipped with a wing sail. This lightweight, retractable sail technology uses wind energy to help propel the ship, potentially cutting down on fuel usage and CO2 emissions.

The sail was provided by marine technology company Smart Green Shipping (SGS), and its installation marks the first time such a system has been fitted to a ship of this type, according to NTS.

The Pacific Grebe has now left the port of Barrow-in-Furness in the UK and will be conducting sea trials this month.

Wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS) are becoming increasingly popular among shipowners seeking to enhance vessel performance and lower fuel consumption.

This month, Japanese shipping company NS United Kaiun Kaisha (NSU) partnered with Brazilian mining firm Vale to equip its bulk carrier, NSU Tubarao, with five wind-assisted propulsion units. Meanwhile, Dutch company Antony Veder retrofitted its gas carrier with a similar system and Jumbo Maritime installed two sails on a heavy-lift vessel.
