NYK, Hokkaido Electric launch onboard carbon capture trial
Japanese shipping firm Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), in partnership with electric company Hokkaido Electric Power, has launched a demonstration project for onboard carbon capture and storage (OCCS) in Tomakomai, Japan.

The initiative will run for three years through fiscal 2028, focusing on the design and operation of carbon capture system to be installed on the coal carrier Pirika Moshiri Maru, owned by NYK and operated for Hokkaido Electric Power.
In addition to onboard capture, the study will examine practical methods for offloading captured CO2 and assess potential pathways for its reuse or utilization.
