The companies have set out plans to develop ships powered by electricity, including a prototype of an electric transfer vessel for the offshore and onshore power industry, called Power Ark, as well as marine energy storage systems.
Ways of powering vessels with electricity are increasingly being explored in by shipping and energy firms. Last week, UK-based Oasis Marine Power announced it has recently completed initial stage testing of an offshore charging station.
Maersk has partnered Danish energy renewable energy firm Ørsted plans to launch the world’s first full-scale offshore charging station for vessels through its new enterprise ‘Stillstrom’.
And last month, Dutch shipmaker Conoship International Projects (CIP) introduced a 3,600 dwt hybrid diesel-electric inland cargo vessel, which is ready for wind assisted propulsion and also designed to run on hydrogen or ammonia fuel in the future.
