NYK Line inks deal to capture emissions while berthing in California

March 5, 2024

Japanese shipping company NYK Line has inked a deal with US-based emission reduction technology firm STAX Engineering to recover exhaust gases from its ships while calling at ports in California, US.

STAX’s technology captures exhaust gases from a vessel’s funnel by connecting it to a barge, a small flat-bottomed ship, or a land-based exhaust-gas treatment system via steel pipes and hoses. Thus, preventing the vessel from venting out the exhaust gases into the air.

The technology makes capturing exhaust gases possible without installing any additional equipment on to the vessel, NYK Line claims.

NYK Line plans to use this technology for all its car carriers calling at major ports in California from January 2025.

The initiative comes in response to the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) expanded exhaust emission regulations that mandated oceangoing container ships, passenger ships, and other vessels calling at California ports to reduce their emissions while at berth. CARB plans to include car carriers and tankers within the scope of this regulation from 2025.
