Working on its decarbonisation goal, Japanese shipowner NYK Line has collaborated with two firms to install fuel-saving devices on 50 of its dry bulk carriers by 2025.

The effect of the devises will be verified by marine equipment manufacturer Nakashima Propeller and fluid analysis company Fluid Techno. They will then select the best combinations to be installed on NYK Line’s bulkers.

The aim is to improve fuel efficiency by managing water flows generated at the rear-end of vessels, NYK Line says in a statement.

It expects the devises to improve vessels' fuel efficiency by 1-8% and help lower their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as a result.

In addition to deploying zero-emission vessels in operation, fuel efficiency gains on existing vessels are vital to achieve a net zero GHG target for 2050, NYK Line argues.

The company is set to launch an ammonia-fuelled tugboat in in the Port of Yokohama in 2024.

Among other decarbonisation projects, NYK Line is working to develop electric offshore vessels for the power industry. Its subsidiary NYK Bulkship has taken delivery of three dual-fuel chemical tankers that can run on methanol when it becomes more widely available in global ports.
