The 40,000-cbm capacity LCO2 carrier will be built at Nihon Shipyard’s facility, which is a joint venture for ship design and sales between compatriot shipbuilder Imabari Shipbuilding and Japan Marine United Corporation.

The vessel will feature high pressure cargo tanks.

The shipping industry promotes the use of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology to reduce the sector's carbon footprint and effectively meet global emissions reduction goals.

The technology captures CO2 at the source, by separating it from other gases and compressing the CO2 for transportation. The liquefied CO2 is then injected deep into the undersea rock site, where it is permanently stored.
