NYK Line to launch ammonia-fuelled tugboat in 2024

After nearly two years of researching and developing an ammonia-fuelled tugboat, Japanese NYK Line and its partners target a launch in 2024.

The vessel will be tested and later deployed in the Port of Yokohama.

NYK Line has been working on the engine with IHI Power Systems and safety testing with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK).

The agreement is part of the Japanese government’s the Green Innovation Fund project, which focuses on development of vessels fuelled with domestically produced ammonia.
