An ammonia bunkering vessel (ABV) being developed by Japanese shipping company Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) has received approval in principle (AiP) from the classification society ClassNK.
The company has used an advanced method of creating 3D models linked to the design drawings to assess risk levels at hazardous locations and escape routes . The method also helped in identifying safety measures when using ammonia.
This is ClassNK’s first AiP for an ABV. Earlier this year, NYK obtained AiP from ClassNK for an ammonia-fuelled tugboat.
