The project entails the building of two water electrolysis plants with a capacity of 35 megawatts (MW) and 20 MW, respectively. The facility will have a total electrolysis capacity of 55 MW and will be powered by electricity generated from renewable energy sources.
The company expects to produce 8,000 mt of green hydrogen annually, which will be used in the production process of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
The company has not specifically earmarked any portion of the production capacity for shipping as of now, but “HVO will be placed on the market blended with our fossil equity product, thus it will reach a wide range of customers,” including maritime, OMV Petrom’s spokesperson told ENGINE.
The funding for the project was secured by inking deals with the Romanian Ministry of Energy under the EU’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), which emphasises on green and digital transition.
