Methanol and ammonia-ready means that the vessels will likely run on conventional fuels from when they are delivered, until they are converted to be able to consume methanol and ammonia. Methanol and ammonia-ready vessels are generally designed in a way that prepares them for future retrofits.
The 13,700 TEU vessels will be equipped with bow windshields and carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. Bow windshields help to reduce a ship's fuel consumption by reducing wind resistance at the vessel's hull body.
These vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2025 and 2026.
Meanwhile, ONE has not revealed details about the equipment manufacturer and shipbuilder selected for this project.
The company “aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050” by investing in new technologies, ONE says in a statement.
Globally, shipowners are increasingly turning towards low-emission alternative fuels to reduce carbon emissions.
Last month, Canadian shipping companies Algoma and Canada Streamer Line (CSL) jointly ordered four methanol-ready Kamsarmax-based bulk carriers.
