Germany’s Hamburg port has provided shore power facilities to cruise and container ships since May last year. It plans to equip all of its container terminals with shore power systems by the end of this year, ONE said.

Shore power facilities are available at the port's Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg (CTH) and HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort (CTT), and two more installations are in progress, ONE said.

Shore-to-ship power or “cold ironing” is an electrical power supply connection provided to ships when they are docked at ports. Instead of running their engines onboard to power essential systems while docked at ports, shore power facilities allow ships to connect to the local electrical grid.

This helps to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and particulate matter. It also cuts down on noise pollution from heavy machinery and generators in port areas.
