As a part of this, Öresundslinjen has contracted the marine battery supplier Echandia to provide the battery system, scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2025.
Companies such as Biby Marine and Imoto Line have recently announced plans to develop vessels that can run fully or partially on electricity.
Electric-powered vessels, while currently ideal for shorter voyages, offer vital insights for future larger-scale electric vessel development. Although their immediate impact on global shipping emissions may be modest, these vessels can help reduce emissions and noise pollution in ports and coastal areas.
The battery system will be installed in Öresundslinjen’s RoPax vessel, M/S Hamlet. The ferry regularly sails between Denmark’s Helsingør and Sweden’s Helsingborg routes, recording around 8,000 voyages annually.
