The facility is scheduled to become operational in 2025.

Construction of the project will mark the beginning of “a new green era of shipping, where large-scale methanol production facilities will supply a constantly growing fleet of methanol-powered vessels”, Ørsted said.

Ørsted’s chief commercial officer for power-to-X (P2X) James Henry told ENGINE in February that demand for e-methanol will significantly outpace supply in the near future.

As for the types of vessels that will prefer e-methanol as fuel, Henry pointed out that new shipbuilding orders have been placed for container vessels, bulk carriers, ferries and offshore wind vessels, in addition to “continued interest” from other maritime segments.
