The vessel was bunkered with a B24 biofuel blend at the Rio Grande Terminal in Brazil. The B24 blend was made up of 24% biodiesel derived from tallow blended with 76% conventional marine fuel.

Petrobras estimates that the biofuel in the blend can reduce the vessel's well-to-wake greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 19% compared to running on conventional marine fuels.

In June, the company carried out a test using biodiesel sourced from soybeans and tallow, which resulted in a GHG emissions reduction of 17%.

“The biodiesel purchased to compose the mixture followed the ISCC EU RED criteria,” Petrobras claims.

The International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) is a certification system based on the European Union's Renewable Energy Directive II (EU RED II), which sets criteria for sustainable production and use of biomass and bioenergy within the EU.

Petrobras expects the bunker market for biofuel blends to develop further.
