It has recently completed a study to analyse the required infrastructure upgrades to supply shore power to cruise ships. It was undertaken by global infrastructure advisory firm Moffatt & Nichol with support from Florida Power & Light (FPL) and cruise operators Carnival Corporation, Disney Cruise Line, and the Royal Caribbean Group.

FPL will generate the power for the project from various sources, including natural gas, nuclear, solar, and wind.

Construction on the project could begin in mid-2024, with all phases completed by 2027.

Shore power facilities will allow calling ships to connect to the local electric power grid and turn off their engines while in port.

According to the port authority, full implementation of this project will help remove 11,366 mt of carbon dioxide. It will also reduce nitrogen oxide and sulphur dioxide emissions by 75% and 51%, respectively.

The project is estimated to cost $160 million, financed through government funding and contributions from FPL and participating cruise lines.
