The vessel operates for about 1,200 hours/year and consumes around 25,000 litres of diesel, which is equivalent to 67 mt of carbon dioxide emissions, the Gothenburg Port Authority says.
The vessel’s diesel engine will be replaced by a new 250 kilowatt (kW) electric engine. It will also have a bank of batteries with 520-kilowatt hour (kWh) capacity, which can be increased further in the future if required.
It will be equipped with an auxiliary diesel engine that runs on hydrotreated vegetable oil.
“The vessel’s task is to be available in all contexts 24/7, so we need that flexibility. But the goal is to run on battery power for 90% of the time,” M/S Hamnen’s skipper David Falk says.
The port authority aims achieve 70% reduction in emissions from port operations by 2030.
