“Both the tense economic situation in Europe, especially in Germany, and background geopolitical factors continue to have repercussions on throughput in the Port of Hamburg,” the port authority said.
However, the port’s throughput of bulk cargoes increased by around 8% on the year to 19 million mt in the first half of this year, and liquid cargo throughput gained 18% to 5.3 million mt, the port authority said.
Meanwhile, Hamburg’s container throughput plunged nearly 12% on the year to 3.8 million TEUs.
It is difficult to make any firm predictions on the port's throughput for the rest of the year, Port of Hamburg's marketing chief executive Axel Mattern said.
"We are assuming that at least the slightly positive trend of the second quarter will continue. How the year will develop further depends directly on the economic mood in Germany and geopolitical developments,” Mattern added.
