“Virginia is the first major US East Coast port to power its entire operation using 100 percent clean electricity,” Virginia Port Authority’s (VPA) chief executive and director Stephen A. Edwards claims.

The clean electricity enables the port to reduce carbon emissions. Its reduction primarily focuses on scope 1 and 2 emissions. While scope 1 emissions are direct exhausts from emissions from equipment, while scope 2 emissions are generated from the electricity used to meet the port’s needs.

The port achieved its electrification target eight years ahead of time. It is a crucial step in helping the port accomplish a net-zero target by 2040, the VPA says.
