The European Commission has granted €22 million ($25.8 million) in funding for the development of port infrastructure at Finland's Port of Helsinki and Germany’s Port of Lübeck-Travemünde.

The funding will support the installation of shore power units at both ports, with the full project expected to be completed by 2027, the port authority of Helsinki said.

The grant will also cover additional infrastructure upgrades, including digitisation of port operations and improved connectivity.

Roughly €12 million ($14 million) of the total grant will go to the Port of Helsinki and the remainder will be allocated to the Port of Lübeck-Travemünde.

The Port of Helsinki unveiled its first onshore power unit last year at Vuosaari Harbour for roll-on/roll-off ferries. The port authority announced plans to expand shore power supply last month, with the next phase set to focus primarily on cargo vessels.
